Free HIV, syphilis testing available for all Delawareans through Sussex Pride, STD Check

DELAWARE – Sussex Pride is opening up a valuable resource for the entire state of Delaware.

Free and Open to All

Through a new partnership with STD Check, Sussex Pride is helping to provide free HIV and syphilis testing at more than 20 locations.

“Partnering with STD Check allows us to offer STD and HIV testing at times that are really convenient for anyone who wants to get tested,” said David Mariner, Executive Director of Sussex pride. “All you have to do when you schedule your appointment is tell them that you are asking for Sussex Pride to help you with your HIV test or your syphilis test.”

Keep Health Top of Mind

June 27th is National HIV Testing Day. Mariner says that getting checked for syphilis and HIV is important to keep in mind year-round.

“Delaware typically has about 100 new HIV infections every year. In 2022, that number actually went up, per the most recent data we have. That year, I think it was a little over 120,” Mariner said. “If you get tested early, and you get treatment early, it’s important for your health; you can live a long and healthy life.”

Caring For Your Community

Getting regularly checked for sexual health issues is important for individuals. Mariner, however, says it also makes an impact on the whole community.

“When you’re in care, when you’re getting treatment and sticking to your antiviral therapy, and you maintain a zero viral load, you’re not going to be able to transmit HIV to people. And, that’s going to cut down on HIV infections for the whole state,” Mariner said. “Take the time to take care of your health.”

You do not have to be a Delaware resident to get in on this program. However, you do have to get tested at one of the designated sites in the state. The program is free and open to all people, regardless of identity or orientation.
