Food Bank of Delaware gears up for distribution at Dover Motor Speedway

DOVER, Del. – The Food Bank of Delaware (FBD) is gearing up for a major food distribution event later this month.

On Tuesday, June 18th, wheels will be swapped out for meals at the Dover Motor Speedway. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendees can expect to be stocked up with non-perishable food items, as well as fresh meats and produce. Parents can also pick up free baby formula.

Food Bank officials ask that attendees pre-register for the event, to keep the line moving. On-site registration will also be available. However, the event is first-come first-served, and food packages are limited to one per household. Attendees are asked to bring proof of Delaware residency, whether that be an I.D. or piece of mail.

Communications Director for the FBD, Kim Turner, says since the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for food assistance has only grown. In fact, she says the Food Bank is seeing more need now than they did during the pandemic.

On top of that, Turner says inflation is pricing many families out of the grocery store. And, as children are let out of school for the summer, Turner says those food costs tend to rise for families.

For those reasons, Turner says the FBD is out serving its community on a daily basis, and not just at major distribution events like the one planned for the Speedway.

“We’re out and about most days of the week by hosting smaller, mobile food pantries,” Turner said. “We might be right in your neck of the woods today or tomorrow. So, we want to remind people that, yes, this big distribution is available, but we also are out in the community every day.”

For residents who are not able to travel to Dover on the day of the distribution, the Food Bank also stocks its healthy pantry centers and small community-based mobile pantries and partner food closets.
