Princess Anne needs volunteers for its “glow up

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Downtown Princess Anne is currently experiencing a glow up, and they need your help to keep beautifying Main Street this weekend.

At the end of April, volunteers planted more than 20 large planters with native pollinators in the downtown area. On May 4th, volunteers will get back to work, by planting flower beds.

“We have dozens, and dozens, and dozens of plants to put in the ground, and a lot of dirt and mulch to move, too,” said Main Street Princess Anne manager, Carrie Samis.

It’s all thanks to a grant awarded by Home Depot, applied for by Walter Woods at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Main Street Princess Anne and UMES are teaming up for the effort.

“Hopefully, that encourages people to stop and check out some of our businesses, eat downtown, shop downtown, stroll around some of the historic buildings,” Samis said.

Aside from attracting visitors, Samis says the work is helping to foster a sense of community pride, and strengthen the connection between UMES students and the town.

“Having students downtown, and engaged, and working directly alongside community members, and families, and that kind of thing is just really cool,” Samis said.

Volunteers can RSVP with Samis by sending her an email at CarrieSamis@gmail.com. However, she says it’s also okay to just show up. Plan to meet up at 10 a.m. at Hawks Corner, located at 11763 Somerset Avenue. Wear outdoor work clothes and plan to get a little dirty.
