Counselors raising awareness for children’s mental health
SALISBURY, Md. – This week people across the world are coming together to highlight children’s mental health.
47 ABC spoke with a local healthcare provider about what trends they’re seeing on the shore. The Department of Health says among youth, 1 in every 5 children suffer from a major depressive episode. In 2020, suicide was the second leading cause of death for children ages 10 to 14.
Ian Bolland with Balanced Point Wellness says the patients he’s serving are seeing these issues because of technology “Many people discuss the effects of social media and perception of what life should be like for these children. And these children are seeing it and wondering why isn’t my life like that?” said Ian Bolland, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor with Balanced Point Wellness.
Bolland says he recommends for kids suffering to get out and get active. Balance Point Wellness is also working to get more therapists in local schools to help out school counselors.
Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week will be celebrated until May 11th.
