Breaking: AP calls MD Republican Senate Primary for Governor Larry Hogan
MARYLAND- The AP has called the race for Maryland’s Republican Primary for Senate for former Governor Larry Hogan.
Hogan secured 67.9 percent of the vote with 143,051 ballots cast, compared to his closest challenger Robin Ficker gaining 30 percent of the vote with 69,071 ballots.
Support for Ficker was concentrated on the Eastern Shore and Western Maryland, with Ficker winning over Hogan in Wicomico, Somerset, and Garrett Counties.
Hogan however consolidated support in the metro areas with a strong showing in Montgomery, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Anne Arundel counties.
On the Eastern Shore Hogan won Worcester, Talbot, Caroline, Queen Anne’s, and Kent Counties.
In a victory speech the former governor praised his record as the state executive and credits his eight years in office with his win.
“We inherited a $5.1 billion deficit and turned it into a $5.5 billion surplus, the largest in state history, and I’ll take that exact same approach to the United States Senate,” Hogan said.
The victory comes just 90 days after the former Governor announced he would run for US Senate.
He faces Angela Alsobrooks in the general election in November, who defeated the US. Rep David Trone.
