MARYLAND – The AP has called the Democratic Primary race for Maryland’s Senate Seat for Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, defeating MD US. House Rep David Trone for the seat.

With 45% of votes counted, the AP called the race at 9:55 pm with 53.2% of the vote with 189,989 votes cast, to Trone’s 42.8% percent with 152,729 votes cast.

Alsobrooks began the night with a 3,000 vote lead that grew throughout the night, with Trone trailing behind throughout the night before the race was called.

The historic race came down to less than 40,000 votes and saw Trone spending over 60 million dollars and becoming the largest self-funded campaigning.  If elected she would become only the third black woman to serve in the US Senate.

The victory for Alsobrookgs coming on the heels of a series of gaffes for Trone, including the use of a racial slur during a committee hearing.

Several key endorsements including Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen also went to Alsobooks.

In a statement Tuesday night Senator Van Hollen said:

Tonight, Angela Alsobrooks made history. In voting for her, Marylanders have chosen a leader with a vision to move Maryland and America forward and the determination to make it a reality. She will fight every day for the success of every Marylander. She is battle-tested and ready to face the challenges ahead, and I know that she will defeat Larry Hogan and prevent MAGA Republicans from taking control of the Senate and implementing their backwards agenda. I know Angela is ready to serve the people of Maryland in the United States Senate, and I can’t wait to continue working alongside her to accomplish great things for our state.

She will face former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan in the 2024 General Election in November.
