AAA breaks down the travel numbers ahead of Memorial Day weekend

MARYLAND – Memorial Day is fast approaching and AAA says it’ll likely be a busy summer season for travel.

AAA estimates more people will be traveling more than 50 miles from home marking a record number in 20 years. AAA says driving is usually more appealing because of convenience and flexibility.

However, gas prices have crept up this spring and they’re expected to increase even more. “The vast majority will be traveling by car, the overall 44 million is up by about 4% compared to last year, and as far as road travel goes we’re anticipating that about 38.4 million Americans will be driving to their holiday destinations, said Ragina Ali.

AAA projects that more than 3.5 million Americans will be flying to their holiday destination about a 5% increase compared to last year and the highest number on record since 2005.
