Tax season ends April 15th: what to know

Preparing For Next Years' Taxes

DELMARVA – Tax season comes to a close on April 15th. Maryland’s Comptroller is urging taxpayers to file online, and file early.

Comptroller Brooke Lierman says that, so far, the state has processed more than 1.5 million returns, paying out almost $1.5 billion in refunds. Tax officials have also managed to process all returns in the standard three-to-five-day window.

If you need to file for an extension, the Comptroller says you should do that as soon as possible.

“You’re considered on time if you file for that extension by April 15th,” Comptroller Lierman said. “You can also make an appointment at marylandtaxes.gov. We also have offices, including our office in Salisbury, in Baltimore, and Annapolis, and more. But, we are really here to help folks.”

New this year, is the Maryland Tax Connect Portal. It includes a platform specifically designed for business taxpayers. More than 120,000 Maryland businesses have registered for it thus far, and the state has accepted 250,000 returns.

“Our tax processing systems are some of the oldest in the nation. And, I’m really proud that we launched a brand new, secure online portal for all business tax types,” Comptroller Lierman said. “This is a self-service portal that will allow business taxpayers to file their taxes online in an easier, and more secure manner. It provides more information, and more capabilities to our taxpayers, as well.”

Tax officials plan to roll the platform out to individual taxpayers in the future. Until then, business tax filers can call 410-260-7980 for help with the portal. The Comptroller’s office is also running twice-weekly webinars, with helpful tips for business tax filing.
