Foodie Friday: OC Chopsticks
WEST OCEAN CITY, Md. – Foodie Photog Mike has been working on his chopsticks skills lately, and he got another test for this week’s edition of Foodie Friday. The utensils are actually in the name. Let’s check out OC Chopsticks.
Heavenly Hawaii Roll
This eatery has something for every lover of sushi and Asian fusion to enjoy. We’re going to kick off these delicious dishes with a visit to the sushi bar. The first roll on deck is the Hawaii Roll; shrimp tempura, coconut, mango, avocado, and cream cheese are just a few of its stars.
“It’s got some awesome tropical flavors, between the mango and the coconut,” said Foodie Friday host Hannah Cechini. “The cream cheese kind of plays a surprising role to me here. I was thinking that I’m not sure how this is going to play well with the coconut and mango. But, it’s subtle, and it kind of just helps to bring all of those flavors together.”
A Regal Roll-Up
The Queen Roll had the Foodie team feeling regal. It starts with Maryland crab meat and eel, and is finished off with bluefin tuna, salmon, and avocado. Top it off with roe, spicy mayo, and eel sauce; making for a colorful combination.
“This roll, I would say definitely get it if you’re not sure which kind of sushi you want to get. You get a little bit of everything,” Hannah said. “I really love how the spicy mayo and the eel sauce have melded together. It creates this really nice, creamy coating, that also has the perfect amount of kick to it.”
Crispy and Flavorful
Now it’s time for the action to heat up. The crispy beef is your go-to if texture is a top-tier food quality for you. The meat is deep fried, as celery, onion, carrot, and green onion are fired up in the wok. Add in the special sauce, and the beef when it’s reached the perfect crunch.
“The moment chef dropped it, all this these little tiny bubbles just shot out,” said Mike. “It was like watching a beer head foam on fast forward. The crispy beef has a nice chew to it. Got some nice caramelized onions in here. I bet these carrots are pretty good, too. Mhm! The carrots got a good little crunch on them.”
Pad Thai Perfection
And at this spot, Pad Thai is truly a feast. Shrimp, chicken, beef, onions, green onions, and egg. Add in the noodles and signature sauce, and don’t forget the fixings; peanuts, bean sprouts, and lime.
“Me and pad Thai go back a long ways. This is one of my go-to orders if I’m going to any restaurant that offers Thai food or Asian fusion,” Hannah said.
The proteins and the noodles are perfectly tender, and coated in that signature flavor.
“The noodles in this pad Thai are really, really tasty. They soak up all of the flavor of everything else that’s in this dish,” Hannah said. “The peanuts are another classic feature of pad Thai. They add a nice crunch, but also that nutty, earthy flavor, that really helps to make sure that the sweet and spicy are getting along well.”
Mike is a newcomer to the dish, and a new fan. “It’s like a little treasure hunt, where you get to hunt for all your ingredients,” he said. “I can see why pad Thai is so popular. It’s just very comforting.”
