Earth Day: Taking care of Delmarva’s rivers
DELMARVA – Special shout out to the earth keeping us grounded.
Happy Earth Day Delmarva. We spoke to a ShoreRivers keeper who monitors the Easton and St. Michaels areas to see what we can do better this time around. Ben Ford says people think it’s trash pickup issues, that are the most important for Earth Day but that’s not true here on Delmarva.
Ford says on the Eastern Shore our rivers see the most issues with sediment and nutrient pollution. “They’re overloaded with nutrients and sediment pollution. So nutrients are things like nitrogen and phosphorus. Those nutrients are necessary for the growth you know, almost all life and we need them in the water. But what we have is way too much,” said Ben Ford, Riverkeeper with ShoreRivers.
Ford says to make sure your local waterways stay swimmable and fishable to get involved. ShoreRivers says you can help by volunteering for their seasonal bacteria program which monitors the location of high public content of water.
