Traffic signal, new turn lanes planned at MD 12 and Robins Ave. in Salisbury
SALISBURY, Md. – Improvements are coming to the intersection of Route 12 and Robins Avenue in Salisbury. The $3.3 million project aims to improve safety and efficiency at the crossing.
Starting this year, crews will be working on adding a traffic signal, and north- and southbound turn lanes on MD Route 12. Additionally, a stub out will be built into the empty field across the street for future development. Bike pocket lanes will also be included in the reconstructed intersection.
“Any time you have a left turning vehicle, it could be one guy that’s in front of the line with 15 through movements behind him. That one person sometimes holds that up,” said State Highway Administration District Engineer, Mark Crampton. “Having those separated turn lanes separates the traffic, and more traffic gets through the intersection.”
Another addition coming to the intersection is an Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalk along Route 12. Signage and stormwater management facilities will also be updated. The road will be resurfaced and repainted, as well.
All of that work requires widening of the road, which will be another big part of the project.
Most of the widening is going to be on the northbound side of Maryland 12,” Crampton said. “Once we go through the traffic phases and establish the turn lanes, the existing road gets overlaid with new striping patterns for turn lanes, through lanes, where the lanes are moving to.”
Crampton says drivers should expect delays in the area during the daytime hours. Work is expected to be completed by the end of this year, weather permitting.
