Ocean Pines speed survey proving “there isn’t a speeding problem”
OCEAN PINES, Md. – Police conducting a speeding survey in Ocean Pines, finding the numbers are better than expected.
“Over the last few weeks, we did a speed survey using our special equipment and it showed that there really isn’t a speeding problem in Ocean Pines,” said Police Chief Tim Robinson.
Ocean Pines Police Department clocked 48,112 vehicles with only 53 topping 50MPH. The speed limit on Ocean Parkway is 35 miles per hour, but Chief Tim Robinson says signage has helped keep speeding stats low. “When you come into Ocean Pines you see signs that say speed strictly controlled and I think folks get the message when they see our officers out there and the respect that people have for our community,” said Chief Robinson.
This means Ocean Pines is one of the safest areas on the shore. However, some residents still feel that drivers are traveling too fast through quieter neighborhood streets which are home to many young children. “I’m really concerned for them like they don’t always know to get out of the road and people aren’t looking for kids and they just fly by on the street all the time,” said Resident Lauren Bossert.
Resident Lauren Bossert says drivers need to remain vigilant. “There’s kids all over this development, so my biggest concern is cars looking out for kids and just knowing that there are kids around and driving appropriately with kids around,” said Bossert.
But Safety doesn’t stop there, Chief Robinson says more tools are yet to come. “We put some new crosswalks in a few places, we’re looking to put in additional crosswalks and overall to make sure Ocean Pines is the safest place for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists,” said Chief Robinson.
Chief Robinson says the surveys will continue. The next survey will take place on the south side of Ocean Pines.
If you notice speeding, endangering the community you’re asked to call the police.
