Maryland missed a key deadline for property taxes across the state, how counties are responding
SALISBURY, MD – A crucial tax deadline was missed by the state of Maryland that could see counties across the state losing out on crucial revenue.
Maryland failed to send thousands of property assessment letters to the tune of about 1,000 households in Wicomico County, meaning those homes would not see their property taxes reassessed and would be taxed at their previous rate for the next 3 years.
County Executive Julie Giordano says that could see the county losing over a million dollars over the next three years if this is left unaddressed.
She tells us with the county having a revenue cap they need those numbers to make sure they don’t raise their taxes too high and risk violating their own law.
“Our revenue cap, we don’t want to charge too little, and then we also don’t want to go above our revenue cap because that’s a law of ours here, so it’s very important for us to get an accurate number in our constant yield,” she said.
County Executive Giordano says she has heard from the Maryland Association of Counties and the Eastern Shore delegation and that they are working to pass a fix, to allow new assessments to go out before the rubber hits the road on drafting a final budget in late April.
