BHM: The Black Vote

SOMERSET COUNTY, Md. – The black vote has always been a topic of conversation as circumstances haven’t always allowed black people a fair chance at the polls.

We spoke with the Somerset County NAACP who says the 14th and 15th Amendments changed that, however, organizations like the Ku Klux Klan would still threaten people not to vote. In Somerset County, the NAACP president says African Americans have the minority district in the county. And with that vote, they have 3 African American commissioners which he says is due to the limited vote.

Over time the polls have changed so Dr. Kirkland Hall says there is no excuse not to let your voice be heard. “We want to encourage black people to understand how powerful their vote is and how it can make a difference in who gets elected. Now, if you think of it in Somerset County – which is spread out so far. The African American vote is scattered,” said Dr. Kirkland Hall.

Dr. Hall says it’s important that people educate themselves and make sure they actually get out and cast their votes.
