BHM: Black Art
CAMBRIDGE, Md. – Black art is a form of expression.
We spoke with a local studio that sells different art forms. They say whether it’s on a canvas, a mask, clothing, music, or a painting, it expresses the different things the black community has experienced. Some of these emotions could be positive and some could be negative.
Jermaine Anderson says either way you can’t put emotion in a box, as it is a place of release. “Always spoke to our people, it has been a subtle language of how we communicate, and how others relate to us. The canvas style artwork is very important because I believe it’s time for black art to be mainstream,” said Jermaine Anderson.
Anderson considers himself an ‘activist,’ “I’ve been an activist since I was 19, I’m 50 years old now, learning stories about my neighborhood, about family, talking about Pine Street, the Pine Street neighborhood, and black owned businesses.
Anderson says it’s important that younger generations see this art. You can check out the Ubuntu Studio in Cambridge.
