PAINTER, Va. – Virginia State Police say a crash that claimed the life of one in Accomack County is under investigation.
The crash happened on Friday on Route 13, a half mile south of Coal Kin Road. Police say that preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a 2012 Ford sedan was speeding in the northbound lanes of Route 13 when it rear-ended a 2016 Chevrolet Cruz. The Ford reportedly traveled across the median as a result, into the southbound lanes of travel and into the path of a tractor-trailer. The Ford subsequently hit the tractor-trailer head-on, ejecting the driver of the Ford into a ditch.
Police say the driver died on impact. The identity of the victim remains unknown.
After being hit, the Chevrolet Cruz reportedly spun and came to a rest in the northbound lanes, facing southbound, before a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado traveling northbound hit the disabled Cruz.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, identified as Baron Powell of North Carolina, was not injured. The drivers of the Cruz and Silverado were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
