Storm prep underway as storm slams Delmarva

In Somerset County, a flooding response center has been activated at Washington High School with 300 beds and dog-friendly accommodations.
Flooding response teams are also on standby for any rescues that may be necessary.

In Salisbury, extended shelter hours and beds are being opened up for the homeless at the Halo Shelter.

“We have about 10 to 12 additional people who have already signed up. And I think we can take probably about 5 to 7 more on the men’s side.

On the women’s side, we have approximately 10 to 12 beds,” said Outreach Coordinator Angel Simpson.

Halo shelter officials say the wet and windy conditions can damage the belongings of homeless individuals so they’re offering a safe dry place to weather the storm.

“They can come in, be out of the rain, it’s a place where they the TV’s on, they can just sit and rest, our cafe is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” Simpson said.

Up the coast in Dewey Beach, Town Manager Bill Zolper tells 47ABC residents have been warned to move property out of at-risk areas and to expect bayside flooding.

The risk he says is downed powerlines or streetlights in those flooded waters, as well as flooding reaching the street and blocking off route one, proving a lengthy detour for emergency service vehicles.

“We sent out a weather warning to our residents here in Dewey Beach, telling them to move their vehicles to low-lying areas, especially along the bay, to move those up closer to Route one or actually on the other side of Route One,” Zolper said.

Zolper says repair crews will be working to take action as damage comes into the town.

“Right now, it’s ensuring that our property owners that are over on the bay in the low-lying areas know to move their vehicles in, to move anything that’s outside because of the high winds,” he said.

Tuesday night the City of Cambridge called for residents to stay home Tuesday night until conditions clear.

Gusts also closed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tuesday for several periods Tuesday.
