CAN working with Cambridge PD to expand neighborhood watch program

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – In Cambridge, CAN is working with local organizations to find solutions for community issues.

CAN, the Cambridge Association of Neighbors. It’s an organization keeping you in the know about your community. “We get to them information about what the City Council is doing what the Board of Education is doing, planning, and zoning, the sewer systems,” said Chuck McFadden, President of CAN.

Setting out to strengthen Cambridge, one of CAN’s current projects is neighborhood watch in partnership with the Cambridge Police Department. “It’s getting neighborhoods together to communities together to work together to be able to see crime as it happens to see suspicious activity in their neighborhood and be able to have a captain of that watch committee and to be able to report and communicate back-and-forth with a certain members of the police departments,” said Chief Justin Todd, of the Cambridge Police Department.

CAN sees the needs in the community and provides support through small groups and volunteers. President Chuck McFadden says you get better results when you work in numbers. “Instead of having one small organization go in it’s one big organization. Commissioners, they understand when we come in and we say we’re representing 750 households they can do the math on that,” said McFadden.

And safety is on CAN’s list of priorities, as they continue to support the neighborhood watch program. It’s something Chief Justin Todd says has to expand in order to promote safety across the city. “We’re going to keep going strong with our community functions and community engagement. With hopes to prevent crime, we can’t arrest our way out of crime, we need to prevent crime before it happens and have resources available for people who need it,” said Chief Todd.

Both the neighborhood watch program and CAN are free to join. CAN is also working on various issues on the waterfront. To join CAN, click here. To join the Neighborhood Watch Program, contact the Cambridge Police Department at 410-228-3333.
