Worcester Co. outperforms on school report card

WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. – Worcester County Public Schools are improving according to the Maryland Department of Education’s schools report card.

Altogether 73% of eligible schools earned a 4-star rating and the remaining stayed at a 3-star status. Worcester County education officials say the scores they received prove strong performance in academic achievement. The performance is in alignment with the district’s state assessments. Some schools did earn lower points because of minimal increases in student chronic absenteeism.

However, district leaders say great staffing contributes to the overall higher ratings. “Is fidelity to our curriculum so choosing an excellent curriculum and having good fidelity towards that. The second piece of the curriculum portion of that is small class sizes,” said Dr. Annette Wallace, a Chief Academic Officer with Worcester County Public Schools. “We work hard to keep them, we work hard to ensure that our teachers have the best resources in the classroom and that they are trained,” said Denise Shorts, a Chief Academic Officer with Worcester County Public Schools.
