SALISBURY, Md. – Journalist Greg Bassett, a staple in Salisbury’s community, has died at age 63. The news was reported by the Salisbury Independent. Bassett was the founding editor at the Salisbury Independent newspaper.

“We’re stunned and saddened at his passing,” said Salisbury Independent Editor-In-Chief Andrew West in the paper’s article announcing Bassett’s death. “He lived and loved newspaper work.  It was an honor to work with him.”

According to the publication, Bassett was the managing editor of INI’s Maryland publications at the time of his death. The role included work at the Dorchester Banner, the Crisfield-Somerset County Times, and BaytoBayNews.com.

Fellow local journalists say Bassett “thoroughly understood the history of Salisbury and Wicomico County.” News reporter for Coastal Point newspaper Susan Canfora tells 47 ABC WMDT she and Bassett began their fledgling careers together at the Daily Times in the late 1980’s.

Throughout their decades-long friendship and colleagueship, Canfora says she admired Bassett’s ability to “conduct even the toughest interviews and write informative and captivating articles.”

Canfora added, “the entire community will miss him for a long, long time.”
