18,000 chickens perish in Pocomoke City fire Wednesday morning

POCOMOKE CITY, Md. – An estimated 18,000 four-week old chickens perished in a fire in Pocomoke City, Wednesday morning.

The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office says the blaze broke out around 5:49 a.m. at 1502 Boston Road. The Pocomoke Volunteer Fire Company initially responded, finding fire and smoke coming from a chicken house.

Crews fought the fire, working to prevent it from spreading to other nearby chicken houses. Firefighters remained on scene for about three hours, ensuring the blaze was fully extinguished.

The structure was ruled a complete loss, and the fire remains under investigation. Pocomoke was assisted by Stockton, Girdletree, Snow Hill, Newark, Marion, Greenbackville, New Church, Atlantic and Saxis volunteer fire companies.
