Rehoboth Beach thanks donor for beach mat donation

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. –  Work to protect beach access is expected to begin in Rehoboth Beach next summer. City officials say that’s being made possible by an anonymous donation.

The city received more than 400 square feet of mats, which will help line the access paths to the beach during the summer. The city says only 30 of the 40 beach paths have mats to line the path through the dunes.

The plan is to use the donated mats to create more paths at the bottom of the dunes to help those with mobility issues once they make it to the beach.

“As you come across the dune you would have a perpendicular mat that runs along the base of the dune so if you are mobility challenged and you come off the dune maybe you have some family around you can sit on the mat and be closer to the water than back at the dune crossing,” said Director of Rehoboth Public Works Kevin Williams.

Beachgoers can expect to see the mats put in place by March or April.
