MDOT touts snow preparations ahead of winter season

MARYLAND – MDOT wants drivers across Maryland to know they are making serious preparations ahead of the winter season.
That means mounting up snow plows onto their fleet of over 2,700 vehicles and topping up their salt and brine supplies statewide in preparation for storms.
Officials say weather has been unpredictable, with the last storm on the eastern shore taking place back in 2021, but the agency says their crews will be able to act fast- both after a storm hits, and in the days before to help ease road conditions.
“All of our salt barns, all the dorms, and all of the brine tanks are all topped off right now. We start to really, really prepare and inspect and get all of our contracts together. And we do something called Snow University, which means we get all of our contractors on board, you know, to make sure we’re all on the same page,” said MDOT Spokesman Charlie Grischar.
MDOT says their newer trucks will also be able to mix their salt- and brine together to help clear roads faster in the aftermath of a snowstorm cutting down on hours when roads are snowed in and preventing the formation of black ice.
