HIV prevention drug could become free with Medicare

DELMARVA – HIV prevention drugs could be free for some Americans.

The drug PrEP would be free in pill form for those 65 and older under the Biden Administration’s Medicare. Putting things in perspective, the drug can cost more than $20,000.00 a year. According to HIV.gov, those 50 and older make up half of all the people in the U.S. already living with HIV.

We spoke with Camp Rehoboth more about the benefits of this change. “The cost of PrEP is a barrier for persons who are uninsured or underinsured and so making the cost of PrEP free for people 65 and up is a great way to start that equitable access for everyone,” said Matty Brown with CAMP Rehoboth.

CAMP Rehoboth offers free, daily HIV testing Monday through Friday at their community center. With legislation still pending, its unclear what this would mean for taxpayers.
