Gun advocates say gun violence isn’t the object, but instead the person behind the trigger

DELAWARE – Following recent shooting incidents in Delaware, gun advocates are speaking out.

Those against gun violence say there needs to be a permit in the first state to purchase guns, however, those for guns say there is more than enough legislation in place for law-abiding citizens to purchase a firearm.

The Delaware State Sportsmen’s Association says to reduce crime, stopping the purchase of guns isn’t the answer, rather you need to look at the person behind the trigger. “Is not dealing with the object. The object is not the problem, it’s the person behind the object. Until you deal with that person behind the object whether it’s a juvenile that shouldn’t have the gun or there’s someone with a mental health issue, whoever it is, until you deal with that person, you’re not going to solve the problem,” said Jeff Hague, the President of DSSA.

Jeff Hague with the DSSA says that the FTAB bill, on top of existing red flag laws, would also help prohibit those who shouldn’t have a gun from purchasing one. However, the law hasn’t gone into effect.

He also says if you see someone with a mental health issue, looking to get a gun, you have to take action.
