Delaware Rep. Ruth Briggs King resigns after move leaves her outside of her district
DELAWARE – Delaware Representative Ruth Briggs King resigned Wednesday after announcing a move in her family home would leave her out of the 37th district and into the 35th.
Lawmakers have ten days to declare the absence, which will spark a special election within 30 days.
Representative Briggs King says she’s proud of her conservative record as one of the few women representing Republicans in Delaware, which she hopes can be preserved by her replacement.
“I’m the only woman that represented the Republican Party in the General Assembly, and I felt that my colleagues need to have that voice at the table of another woman,” she said adding “It was important to have an opportunity to have a woman on the ticket, and I’m hopeful that Sussex County Party chair gives that thought when he makes his decision.”
Representative Briggs King does have a replacement in mind but would not be sharing at this time. She tells 47 ABC that this resignation is not a bid for the senate seat, stating she would not challenge Senator Brian Pettyjohn or 35th district representative Jesse Vander Wende.
