SBY Election Board: Outten qualified to run for mayor
SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury Election Board clearing mayoral candidate Megan Outten to finish out her campaign Monday afternoon.
The unanimous vote comes after a letter was sent to the Board, claiming that Outten did not live in city limits. That is one of the requirements to run for mayor in Salisbury, as well as being a qualified city voter.
Board Chair Susan Carey said Outten “clearly” lived in the city for at least a year before filing to run for mayor. In March 2022, Outten filed her address as 305 North Division Street. She updated it to 410 Winder Street in March of 2023.
Outten says she provided the Board copies of her rental agreement, as well as an affidavit of residency; steps Outten says she doubts she would have had to take, had she had been a homeowner.
“I think I went above and beyond what a typical candidate provides when running for mayor,” Outten said, following Monday’s meeting.
Following this test, Outten believes the application for Salisbury’s municipal election candidates could be streamlined to avoid this issue in the future.
“I think this just showcases a lot of the barriers that renters face in getting involved in local politics.”Outten said. “Making sure that we have all the information from the candidates helps for a more seamless process for the election time.”
Salisbury’s mayoral election will be held November 7th from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
