Local Leaders react to narrow vote that avoided U.S. Government shutdown until November

Voting Rights Fails In SenateDELMARVA-  A Saturday night vote in the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly avoided a government shutdown, after being passed in the U.S. Senate.

According to the Associated Pres,s Republicans introduced a stopgap funding bill that will fund the government until Nov. 17, a near “clean” continuing resolution that did not include the priorities of some in the party, such as border security measures and broader cuts.

The measure only passed on Saturday in the House with Democratic support, as 90 Republicans voted against it and 126 of them voted for it.

US House Rep for Maryland’s Eastern Shore Randy Harris told 47 ABC  that he voted no on Saturday, but did vote to pass an even more strict bill Friday,

“I supported a resolution on Friday that would keep the government open – but would have cut spending levels and secured our southern border.  With a $2 trillion deficit, I can’t support keeping spending levels where they are and keeping our southern border wide open.”

Democrats in the House in Senate, including House Rep Lisa Blunt Rochester, Delaware Senator Tom Carper, and Maryland Senator Van Hollen released a statement praising the passage of the CR, but said they want to prevent a similar deadlock come November

“I’m relieved Congressional Republicans came to their senses to avoid an unnecessary, reckless, and entirely manufactured shutdown that could have been avoided. In truth, this is only a band-aid, as this temporary funding will only last until November 17th. We must come together, Democrats and Republicans, to fund the government with a long-term solution.,” Senator Carper said, calling for additional funding for Ukraine to be added to the next spending bill, a key measure missing from the CR.
