Temple Beth Israel Observes Yom Kippur in Salisbury
SALISBURY, Md. – Monday marks the Yom Kippur Holiday for members of the Jewish community.
Temple Beth Israel held services throughout the day, with members fasting from all water and food as part of the somber event.
The event is meant to serve as a day of reflection and forgiveness, with services focused on calling on forgiveness for those wronged by actions throughout the year and serves as the final event of the Jewish High Holidays, which began with the Jewish New Year of Rosh Hashanah.
The congregation says that the holiday is about thinking about wrongdoing- and asking for forgiveness, they are glad to be able to do it- with a supportive community around them.
“Today we culminate the services with the sounding of the shofar, the Rams horn, one long note, and then we have a festive celebration to end the service because we’re fasting from 7:00 the night before until 730 this evening,” said Beth Isreal Board Member Andrew Karten, adding, “we’re doing a lot more of the English readings singing and we have a couple of members of the congregation that lead us in some of their prayers in Hebrew and in English, it’s pretty meaningful.”
The temple says they are glad to see their members grow in the community as they approach their 100-year anniversary in 2025.
