Foodie Friday: Nothing Better LLC
SEAFORD, Del. – Sometimes you have to look a little harder for the best things in life. Nothing Better LLC is off the beaten path, located on a quiet stretch of road off of Route 9 in Sussex County. But, inside is a team that truly has a passion for putting a smile on peoples’ faces. That’s an easily accomplished mission for them, because their food is just that good.
Serving Up Smiles
Owner, Nick Bohenko, started out dishing up mini donuts on the weekends, out of his food truck. Bohenko then got a brick and mortar in Georgetown, and moved to his current location about five years ago. What hasn’t changed: Bohenko’s passion for the people he serves.
Busy Behind the Grill
On this edition of Foodie Friday, Bohenko and his team are busy behind the grill, starting with a sirloin cheese steak.
“We’re going to chop it up. It comes with fried onions and sweet peppers,” Bohenko says over the sizzle. “We’ll let that cook down. Once it’s cooked through, we’ll go ahead and mix it all together. We’ll layer the cheese on top, let it melt. Chop it all together.”
Next, Bohenko starts building a monster Italian sandwich, which he’s known for. And, there’s a good reason for that. The list of ingredients is seemingly endless, making for a hearty helping: smoke provolone cheese, imported ham, capicola, Genoa salami, light onions, pickles, sweet peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, a splash of vinegar, pepper, oregano, light salt, and a blanket of peppered ham to top it all off.
“Most people cannot finish this,” Bohenko remarks as he adds the finishing touches.
The feast doesn’t stop there. Up next is a creation of Bohenko’s own: the slaw fire crispy chicken sandwich.
“We’re going to put [the chicken] in our sweet chili sauce, we’re going to turn it around and make sure it’s basted well. This is where the fire comes in,” Bohenko says. “We have a fresh brioche bun, toasted on the grill. Our fresh coleslaw. That goes on top. Then, we take our bun, set that on top.”
Feeling Spoiled and Sentimental
Sitting down in front of so much food, Foodie Photog Mike and host Hannah Cechini couldn’t help but feel spoiled, and sentimental.
“Nick and his family have really put together a place filled with nostalgia,” Mike said of the vintage memorabilia and video games filling the dining room. “I can’t imagine someone my age or even 20 years younger than me not seeing something that would bring a smile to their face.”
Super Sandwiches
We started with a simple, but beloved, staple: a sausage link breakfast sandwich. “Skin’s got a good snap, it’s got that nice bit of smokiness that you want in a good sausage,” Mike remarked. “The rest of this Foodie episode is powered by this sandwich.”
And now, to the Italian sandwich. “When you’ve got a sandwich that you can’t even close all the way, that’s how you know you’re about to dive into something really good. And, as Mike just reminded me, this is only half of the sandwich,” Hannah said, holding up their half. “Everything just comes together, and it’s a beautiful, refreshing, Italian sub. I can totally see myself stopping in here on the way to the beach, getting a sub like this, bringing it with me.”
Time to get cheesy. “Almost feels like holding a baby,” said Hannah as they held up the hefty handful. “This cheese steak is so hearty and everything is just so wonderfully melted together.”
Last, but certainly not least, Bohenko’s slaw fire crispy chicken sandwich. It definitely lives up to its name.
“The sauce has a really nice little kick to it, but it’s not overwhelming. It also has a nice sweetness, which compliments the coleslaw,” Hannah marveled. “The chicken is perfectly fried. It’s got a beautiful crunch on it, and it’s juicy, it’s tender. It’s just delicious.”
