Banned Books Week approaching: Why you should exercise your First Amendment Rights
LEWES, Del. – Banned Books week is slowly approaching and the Lewes Library wants you to take part.
The week celebrates the freedom to express ideas in books. It also reflects on the idea of censoring books in schools and local libraries making it so individuals don’t see certain content.
Lewes Library director, Jill Dipaolo says this week exercises the First Amendment right to use free speech, read, and learn while viewing different perspectives. “Lately in the national culture, its even more important for us to celebrate the plus sides of us having a variety of experiences available for us to learn and grow as humans and as individuals. This is what public libraries do best. We give people access to this information,” Dipaolo said.
You can participate in the library’s banned books tournament by pitting your favorite titles against each other in four categories. Click here for the details.
Banned Books Week starts October first.
