White Marlin Open benefits local efforts to fight hunger
OCEAN CITY, Md – The White Marlin Open is in full swing in Ocean City, and with that fun and competition comes a serious push to help fight hunger.
For years, pounds of fresh-caught fish is delivered to the Maryland food bank and the Diakonia homeless shelter in Ocean City.
Last year NBA Superstar Michael Jordan delivered a tuna he caught at the competition to the shelter.
They say fresh fish is hard to come by for those who rely on them for their meals and they say they can’t wait to see how much food they’ll be receiving this year.
“You never know how much you’re going to get, but we are looking for hundreds of pounds delivered daily, so hopefully today is going to be our first day and people literally do come to the food pantry asking to make sure they get fresh fish in their food that day,” said Diakonia Pantry Director Susan Blaney.
The shelter says they will freeze any fish they are not able to serve fresh to keep it available to ship across Maryland for up to 30 days.
