U.S. Senator Tom Carper handing out free lunch to families in Seaford

SEAFORD, Del. – Throughout the school year kids in the Seaford school district get free breakfast and lunch.

With a partnership between the USDA, the federal government, the state government, and local school districts, kids are still able to get a fresh and delicious meal in the summer months. On Tuesday, kids had a hot lunch of chicken nuggets and fries with milk, fruits, and veggies.

We spoke with the supervisor of the program who says it ensures a healthy meal for all “To be able to provide these free nutritious meals during the Summer is beneficial for everyone’s budget. Every parent’s budget every adult’s budget and it gives us the opportunity to stay connected with the students in the community during the summer,” said Supervisor Julie Kirby of Nutrition Services.

And a familiar face made a guest appearance Tuesday handing out those lunches. U.S. Senator Tom Carper says growing up in the church he learned to give back and it’s everyone’s responsibility to help feed the hungry. “We have a moral obligation to feed the hungry and this is a shared responsibility, it’s not all on the federal government, it’s not all on the state government or even the school districts. It’s a shared responsibility and we’re trying to do our part and hopefully, others will do there’s as well,” said U.S. Senator Tom Carper.

Last year the program served more than 500,000 breakfasts and lunches across Delaware. The meal program is set to end on Friday.
