Trucking industry shortage continues, Wor-Wic CC has a plan

DELMARVA – 47 ABC has been following the trucking shortage across the nation.

We spoke with Wor-Wic Community College about their trucking program. Officials say the shortage continues however it has gotten smaller but it’s still not sustainable. Many companies tried new approaches to accommodate the issue.

90% of trucking companies increased pay by 15% to 18% to make the positions look more attractive.

Here on Delmarva, Wor-Wic Community College tells us they are working to keep people coming into the industry. “We had our busiest year yet. We’re still busy, we’re still trying to find ways to grow and be creative with the equipment that we have and the instructors that we have to make as many truck drivers as possible,” said Kelly Carey, with Wor-Wic Community College.

The school has made more truck drivers in just the last year than in the 20 years that they’ve been doing this.

Kelly Carey says they make sure to advertise the industry with everything that comes with it because there’s a lot more to consider including the hours, travel, and the lifestyle change.
