Judge George Ames Jr. sworn in as the first Black Chief Judge of the Dorchester County Orphan’s Court

DORCHESTER COUNTY, Md. – In Dorchester County, Judge George Ames is now appointed to a higher court.

“Judge Ames was very instrumental working with the school system,” said Principal Vaughn Evans of Dorchester Middle School.

George Ames Jr. now adding the First African American Chief Judge of the Dorchester County Orphans court to his list of accolades. Appointed by Governor Wes Moore and a judge since 1994 with 7 degrees, Ames is now in a position set out to lead on the bench. “The chief judge really is a teacher for the other two judges. You have to know the code and help to bring them along,” Chief Judge George Ames Jr. of Dorchester County Orphan’s Court said.

Chief Judge Ames says with this duty he wants “to see our community grow, and our young people have an opportunity to do what they can do to be all that they can be,” the Judge emphasized.

North Dorchester Middle School Principal Vaughn Evans gave the Honorable George Ames Jr. his accolades admiring the strides Chief Judge Ames made to keep kids in Cambridge out of trouble. “The three judges going into the community and talking to different groups different student groups, trying to put them in the right direction trying to change their lives, and let them know that there is a better life education is the key. And so he continues to support the community and children by making sure that they have the resources that they need,” said Principal Evans.

And making such a historical moment at 81 years old, the Chief Judge says that you have to go for what you want to achieve. “I was taught by the people to dream big and that if you do right you can accomplish great things so this is just part of the highlight of my career,” said Chief Judge Ames Jr.

Chief Judge Ames Junior says he was in the right place at the right time and when he stepped foot in office he planned not to take over, but to work together with the other judges.
