Cambridge recovering from Monday’s flood
DORCHESTER COUNTY, Md. – The severe weather Monday took a hit to Cambridge causing some flooding.
“We did receive over 4 inches of rain in less than 2 hours which caused severe inundation,” said Jimmy Windsor with Dorchester County Emergency Services.
Thunder, lighting, and rain pouring down across Delmarva Monday night. One Cambridge resident describing the flooding that happened just outside his home. “About 10:30 last night the water was up to that tractor trailer truck, there was a limb about this big, about a foot from my door coming off the tree,” said resident Larry Bradley.
Dorchester County Emergency Services out Tuesday to assess the damage fortunately no one was seriously hurt. “Especially in the low lying areas of Cambridge, such as here at the intersection of Franklin and Henry Street where we had numerous disabled vehicles, people who were in need of assistance from the fire company to get out of their homes,” said Windsor.
Jimmy Windsor says part of the flooding issue in Cambridge stems from the area’s physical make up. “The topography of Cambridge is such that it’s fairly low lying ,it’s fairly flat, but you do have lower sections of Cambridge, so when we get severe inundations of water like 4 inches of rain in less than 2 hours it goes to the lowest point,” Windsor explained.
With the roads in Cambridge clear, Windsor calls the city lucky. “Most of storm water has receded by now out into Cambridge Creek and out into the Choptank River, so we are very fortunate to be in this situation where we don’t have lingering effects from that,” said Windsor.
Dorchester County EMS is asking anyone who has long term severe home damage to contact their insurance companies. If you have issues beyond that contact their office at 410-228-1818.
Emergency Services also says that the Red Cross is available for those who need their assistance.
