Mass Shooting response: “It’s gun violence, it truly is and it’s the lack of accountability”

SALISBURY, Md. – Sheriff Mike Lewis believes the gun violence issue isn’t just here in Salisbury, but across the nation.
The reason being, a much larger issue, he describes it as a lack of responsibility.
“I think the gunfire that happened quite honestly earlier this morning is a microcosm of something much larger that’s going on across this country right now, And it’s gun violence, it truly is and it’s the lack of accountability with juveniles and with those committing crimes. I don’t think it’s a firearm issue at all I think it’s the violence associated with society today because of a pure lack of accountability,” said Sheriff Mike Lewis of Wicomico County.
Sheriff Lewis is calling out lawmakers tonight, who he says provoke criminals to commit crimes. Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano agrees saying the “soft on crime policy” is an issue.
She is referencing a mass shooting that happened in Baltimore, leaving 2 dead and 28 injured just the other day. Regardless of the cause, Giordano is calling this morning’s incident in Salisbury a tragedy.
“It’s inexcusable and it makes it very difficult for me as County Executive knowing that you want to be tough on crime and you want to keep your citizens safe and a lot of times stuff like this it’s out of your control, so our hearts just pour out to these families. Thoughts and prayers to the families that stress dealing with it right now,” Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano said.
Julie Giordano also spoke with Governor Wes Moore who offered assistance, including resources for the police officers and the community.
Governor Wes Moore also released a public statement
“In just a few days, two mass shootings in our beloved state have taken lives and ripped at the fabric of our communities. I grieve with the victims in Salisbury and their loved ones, as well as the community that has lost one of their own. To those who are hurting: My heart is with you.
I would like to thank our first responders who rushed to the scene, and I am confident that law enforcement will bring those who committed this vile act to justice. I spoke earlier this morning with both the county executive of Wicomico and the mayor of Salisbury. I will continue to stay in close contact with local officials and authorities and will assist in every way possible.
These incidents show that this scrounge of gun violence is not something that any one community or any one group is wrestling with. Whether you live in a big city or a small rural town, these tragedies impact all of us—the families who are no longer whole during holidays; the parents who don’t get to see their kids graduate; the siblings who lose their best friend.
I speak for everyone when I say, again, that we have had enough. My administration will not stop in our mission to prevent tragic acts of violence like the one we have witnessed.”
The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office is also urging anyone with information to call crime stoppers at 410-548-1776.
