Halo Shelter expands capacity ahead of hot weather to help serve homeless population.

SALISBURY, Md – Temperatures above 90 degrees are here to stay in Salisbury, and while it’s providing a mild inconvenience for those with access to food, water, AC, and shelter, the Halo Center says it can be extremely dangerous for those outside for extended times in these conditions.

The halo shelter tells us they are looking to get as many people as possible into their air-conditioned building with food water and more to help that vulnerable population.

“The rescue center, is open and we’ll be open until our cafe opens tonight at six, at which time there’s something that you’re going to be coming into the cafe, being able to have a delicious meal, and then being able to go into the shelter, water is provided for walk-ups, whatever the need is,” said Director Celeste Savage adding “they have to be hydrated, they have to be safe and our doors open. So we do welcome them to come on in and be with us.”

Celeste tells us as of noon today they had 40 or so people using their center and by the end of those extended hours today it could be as many as 60 people but she says they are ready to take that increased demand which means protecting people from the heat.

She tells us as conditions continue, donations of water would be much appreciated as it is the number one resource they are handing out to those who arrive to take shelter from the heat.
