Foodie Friday: Savory Indulgence at the Delaware State Fair

HARRINGTON, Del. – Last Friday, the Foodie Friday team highlighted sweet stuff being offered at the Delaware State Fair. This Friday, we’re going savory; checking out some of the best fried, baked, and cheesy offerings in Harrington.

Unique Combination

Some things just go together: carnival rides and games, pepperoni and cheese, and… pickles and pizza?!

“We developed the pickle pizza because everyone kept asking us for ranch when we served the pizza,” said owner of Spaghetti Eddie’s, Eddie Porcelli.

Porcelli’s spot has been a staple at the fair for years, serving up Italian classics. “We enjoy coming here to the fair because we’ve seen generations grow up here,” he said.

And, it’s some of the more unique combinations that keep foodies coming back for more. Pickle pizza starts with a thin and crispy crust. “This is something that is not in the realm of what people expect pizza to be,” Porcelli said.

Perfectly Pickle-y

The pie gets a loving coating of parmesan dressing, mozzarella all the way to the edges, plenty of specially imported pickles, dill weed, and ranch dressing.

“I love pickles, and I love pizza. So, I’m excited to try this out,” Foodie Friday host Hannah Cechini said before going in for their first bite. “The dill is really nice. It’s almost like a refreshing flavor on top of the pizza, because usually the cheese and the dough and everything is a little heavy. But the pickle is a nice bright note over top of all of that. It tastes garlicky, it’s cheesy, it’s got a little bit of a cool taste to it, too. And, I see you’ve got a nice amount of dill on top of it to really express that pickle flavor.”

Foodie Photog Mike was impressed with the sheer size of the slice; almost as big as his head.

“That’s a good slice of pizza right there. That’s not a small slice of pizza,” Mike marveled. “It’s got a nice dough. It’s been disciplined soundly by the pizza maker. I watched him pound it into shape here. The pickles are nice and thin. So, they’re not too aggressive. And, the dill is just a nice herbal note. Surely the most unique white pie I’ve ever had.”

Serving Up Street Food

Another vendor bringing new flavors to fairgoers is Anna Sue. She just opened Tuk Tuk Wings and Thai Bowls in Elsmere. And, Sue is already bringing all they have to offer to the Delaware State Fair.

“Actually, we just started business like last month,” said Sue. We enjoy doing it! This is like our newborn baby.”

The whole idea: bringing Asian-style street food flavors to Delawareans.

Chilly Balances Cheesy

Sue starts off our tasting by offering a refreshingly cold Earl Gray milk tea. But the satisfaction doesn’t stop there.

“Also, we have Thai iced tea. It’s a traditional Thai iced tea,” Sue explained. “Colorful taro milk tea. Also, we do refreshing mango green tea and strawberry lemonade.”

“It’s very refreshing, nice and cool so you can cool off at the fair,” Hannah said with relief. “We know it’s hot out here.”

And good thing Hannah got that milk tea. They needed it to wash down a melty monster of a mozzarella stick. Oh, and did we mention it’s covered in hot Cheetos?

“It’s super cheesy. The Cheetos on the outside just add to that. They also add a nice little crunch,” Hannah said. “The sweet Thai sauce is really good, too. It’s got a nice spice to it; it’s got a good bite, but it’s sweet, too. That’s balanced really nicely. This is so, so delicious.”
