Sussex County unveills $2M grants for affordable housing units

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. – Sussex County awarding 2 million dollars as part of its latest housing trust fund program.
The funds will help get 160 housing units on the market by helping developers absorb rising costs and keep the units affordable for future renters.
The money is being split into four payments of 500 thousand dollars, with one recipient being Habitat For Humanity.
The county says this could make a major dent in the affordable housing crisis.
“These projects are millions of dollars, they’re starting from the beginning and some of these funds are going towards pre-development,” said Sussex County Housing and Community Development Director Brandy Nauman, adding “These projects are kind of at the beginning stages, but we really hope to see construction within the next year and the preservation efforts as well.”
The units would go to families 65 percent above the poverty line, which Nauman says for a family of four would be an income of 57 thousand dollars a year.
