State of Emergency issued for LGBTQ+ community
DELMARVA – A state of emergency has been issued by the Human Rights Campaign for the LGBTQ+ community.
The organization cited a wave of targeted legislation toward the community. 47 ABC spoke with the American Civil Liberties Union of Delaware who says there aren’t enough protections in place for the LGBTQ+ community, so when someone of this community is targeted or discriminated against they don’t have the legal help needed.
Delaware ACLU Executive Director Mike Brickner says the fight for civil and human rights is never really over and the ACLU continues the fight for equality.
“The ACLU has been very active around trans and LGBTQ issues across the country, in states that have passed the bans on healthcare or students playing in sports, we’ve been there to file litigation and we’ve been successful in several of those cases,” Executive Director, Mike Brickner of the Delaware ACLU said.
Brickner says it’s important that if you are of the LGBTQ+ community to know the laws when you are traveling. He says for change to occur, the movement has to be rebuilt and continue to grow stronger.
