June 1st marks start of 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season
DELMARVA – June 1st marks the beginning of the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season, with monsoon conditions matching up with El Nino conditions to create what could be a stronger and longer season than in the past.
47ABC’s Meteorologist Ulises Garcia tells us hurricanes rely mainly on warm waters to form, and with water temperatures up globally, we could see more storms that strike the lower part of the east coast, redevelop into stronger storms before striking Delmarva, despite losing their tropical component.
“It has the potential to continue to intensify, especially with the fact that we are near the Gulf Stream. So that area always is fueled by warm waters and that could help the chance for redevelopment, even if it weakened, say, over land or parts of Florida or other parts of the southeast. And also keep in mind that the last couple of years we’ve also been here impacted on Delmarva by remnants of tropical cyclones have impacted the Gulf of Mexico.”
The season lasts through November 30th and is expected to peak around September.
