Delegate Wayne Hartman weighs in on Wicomico County School Book controversey

SALISBURY, Md – Delegate Wayne Hartman is weighing in after, parents continue to raise complaints over books they claim are sexually explicit stocked at the Wicomico County school libraries.

He tells us as a member of the Ways and Means sub-committee many education topics are brought his way, and says multiple parents reached out expressing concerns over the content of some books, including explicit acts, and explicit illustrations.

He tells us he understands there is a process to report a book but tonight he’s calling for the district to keep a closer look at what children are seeing.

“The superintendent did respond to very promptly, you know, that there’s a process that I just hope that the school board will make that process easy so that if a book is challenged, that there is a process where it can be addressed timely,” he said.

Hartman says this is not a political matter, and it’s not his place to decide what books should be or should not be in the school.

However, he says he wants both the parents to have an easier way to voice their concerns and for more stringent vetting of material before it makes it into school.
