Plastic bag ban proving to be successful in Easton
EASTON, Md. – Easton’s plastic bag ban has been in effect since April 2nd.
Single-use plastic bags are no longer used at checkout lines. And more than a month in, community leaders say it’s going pretty well. The largest local chain stores were surveyed to see how they’re adjusting and results indicate that they’ve saved over a million plastic bags in just 30 days.
Local leaders say the ban is in its infancy and more progress lies ahead. “We want to continue to improve, paper bags are still available and we plan to continue making them available but we also want to reduce the amount of those that are going out so we’re going to continue to market and promote people using reusable bags that way we’re eliminating waste across the board,” said Greg Mueller, PR Specialist for the Town of Easton.
Easton is now helping other communities with their own plastic bag ban initiatives. Town leaders say they’re continuing to keep an eye on plastic bag usage and will provide updates as time goes on.
