Habitat For Humanity, Perdue Farms team up for “Women Build”

SALISBURY, Md. – Come July, a family of six will be the owners of a brand new, beautiful home on Martin Street in Salisbury. The dozens of hands that are helping to build the home are not your average construction crew.

Finishing Touches

Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County and Perdue Farms are teaming up. Women are getting an opportunity to get their hands dirty, and give back to those who need a little extra help.

“This is another testament to the unbelievable donations and support we get from the community,” said Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County, Molly Hilligoss. “Look at this neighborhood. Almost every home on this street now is homeowners.”

Thursday, volunteers got together to put some of the finishing touches on the home.

“We’re going to take care of all the painting, we have all the trim that has arrived. They get to help paint the trim and put that up. And, we’ll just be waiting on the kitchen cabinets and the final fixtures,” said Hilligoss. “We have a family that has four children, and mom and dad, purchasing this beautiful four-bedroom, two-bathroom house on Martin Street.”

Women Build

The day also marked a Women Build event. Women who work at Perdue Farms got a unique opportunity to learn a new skill, and give back to their community.

“I think it’s neat when a group of women are able to come out here, and show that we’re just as capable of doing some of the things that maybe aren’t always recognized as kind of a gender-neutral opportunity,” said Perdue Transportation Manager and volunteer Carrie Johnson.

Breaking down barriers, and putting up walls that a family will call home; volunteers say it’s an “empowering” experience.

“It’s been wonderful that we’ve had the opportunity, and Perdue has offered us the opportunity to be involved in it. Ultimately, it’s important for us to be active,” said Johnson. “Just seeing the family, and knowing that they’re going to get their own home, their own place, especially for the children, they get their own bedrooms – it’s an amazing feeling.”

Get Involved

Volunteers say if you want to get involved, but have no construction experience, not to worry. Everyone is welcome to help out, no matter their skill level.

“I think the message is, don’t be scared. At the end of the day, it’s important for us to get out there and be active in our communities,” said Johnson.

“It’s super easy. You don’t have to have any experience,” Hilligoss added. “We always have more than one project going on. So, there’s always something to do.”
