Sen. Carper, Milford Officials celebrate $16.5 Mil. grant for towns new police station

MILFORD, Del. – Senator Tom Carper, and officials from the USDA in Milford Thursday, celebrating the approval of a 16.5 million dollar USDA Rural Development grant for the town’s brand new police station.

“The Police station is basically double in size and state of the art it is really needed given the growth in the Milford community,” said USDA Rural Development For Delaware and Maryland Director David Baker.

The building construction was started in January 2021 and is scheduled to be completed by October 2024.

Milford Chief of Police Cecilia Ashe tells 47ABC the new space will feature brand-new technology, showers, locker rooms, a community room for public events, and a gym.

Ashe says it’s about making officers feel valued in the space they work.

“Giving them a healthy work environment and giving them more space and the space gives us the opportunity to as the city grows for us to grow this department into the future,” Ashe said.

Senator Carper tells us this is the kind of project he’s glad to support.

“If you don’t have safety if you don’t have law enforcement in a community you don’t have anything and this is going to go a long way to make sure they can recruit the kind of officers they want and need and second they have the technology and wear with all to do the job,” he said.

Carper tells 47ABC the grant takes the form of a low interest loan that the town will pay back over a series of years as it works to grow its tax base and population.
