Sea Colony hosts ‘The Journey’ 5k, Tennnis/Pickleball tournament to raise funds for Myeloma research

BETHANY BEACH, Del. – Sea Colony and the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation partnered up for a weekend of events to help raise funds for Multiple Myeloma research.

The event known as The Journey, saw over 200 participants raise 80,000 dollars through a combination of tennis and pickleball tournaments as well as a 5k and 1-mile fun run.

The fundraising weekend was inspired by Sea Colony homeowner, Eric Gelber, who ran 200 miles around Central Park in New York City, to raise funds and awareness for the MMRF. A showing of the documentary on his journey “200 Miles” was screened for participants looking to get involved.

Gelber was present at the event and tells 47ABC that of the many races he has participated in for this cause, this one felt different.

“I was running for my friend, but this is a different event to an ultra-marathon and we got the community out for this and it’s a great feeling,” he said adding “It had more impact I’ve met more of the community met a lot of patients and family,” he said.

Gelber says since he started running over a decade ago, he has been able to raise over 2.3 million dollars for Multiple Myeloma research.

Organizers say they were thrilled with the turnout.

“We had over 200 people come out to support the event from viewing the movie 200 Miles to pickleball and tennis, and of course, we ended the day with some rain but we got our 5k run and our one-mile fun walk,” said Outreach Coordinator Jennifer Neal.

Vice President of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation Mindy Flin tells 47ABC the funds will towards new clinical trials aimed at developing treatments for the disease.

Sea Colony says they are already considering bringing the event back after its success.
