Teen arrested for possessing gun at Del. high school

GEORGETOWN, Del. – A 16-year-old has been arrested after he was found in possession of a handgun on school property Wednesday morning.

At around 9 a.m., the school resource officer at Sussex Central High School was notified by staff that a student in the building had a firearm in his possession. The trooper made contact with the student and removed him from his classroom.

A subsequent search of the student’s backpack led to the discovery of an unloaded handgun with accompanying ammunition. The gun was confiscated, and the student was taken into custody.

No students or staff were harmed and the school day proceeded as normal.

The teen was charged with possession of a weapon in a safe school zone, a felony. He was later released on a $2,500 unsecured bond. “The case will go to family court because he is a juvenile, so family court handles all juvenile defendants, that’s over in Georgetown,” said Senior Corporal Leonard DeMalto.

The student was issued a no-contact order with the Indian River School District.
