Caesar Rodney HS celebrating International Women’s Day
CAMDEN, Del., – It’s International Women’s Day.
Caesar Rodney High School students get some first-hand inspiration from local women leaders.
Seniors got to ask panelists questions and learn the tips and tricks to be a successful leader in Delaware. “You can never give up and you have to have perseverance in everything that you do,” says Delaware Senator Nicole Poore.
Celebrating International Women’s Day students at Caesar Rodney High School got to hear from first-state leaders about the challenges women face on their paths to success. Delaware State Senator Nicole Poore says she beat the odds in a male-dominated government. “When I started we were less than 20% of females in the general assembly I was one of 3 women in the state senate of 21 senators,” the Senator adds.
First elected back in 2012, Senator Poore says it’s powerful to see how far women have come in holding more seats in legislative Hall. “Wanting to do women’s rights it was a little bit of a challenge for sure but today we’re 40% women in the legislature.
Seniors Jasmyne Kinslow and Jade Baun led the conversation Wednesday saying they were moved by the women featured on the panel, calling it an enriching experience. “I’m so excited to see them want to learn more and woman’s backgrounds and I’m so excited to see what they’re going to do in the future,” Kinslow says. “Being able to learn so much from the women and being able to take their advice as I traverse through my journey and through my future I hope to kind of network with them like they said and grow and learn with them as well,” says Baun.
For the young ladies who weren’t a part of the discussion, Senator Poore says you will never know what’s coming at you but keep going. “I would just say change is inevitable, accept change just continue to move forward,” says the Senator.
Senator Poore also says the progress the first state has made is significant. Right now they make up 51% of the population.
And good news for all the women sitting in on the forum. One of the panelists, Wilmington University President Dr. Laverne Harmon is offering a full scholarship to one of the Caesar Rodney seniors.
