Youth in Cambridge learning what it means to love yourself
CAMBRIDGE, Md. – Kids had the opportunity to pamper themselves, highlighting their beauty, the event set out to show kids what self-love means. Reciting affirmations like “I am beautiful and my life matters.”
“Getting to know yourself getting to know what it is you love yourself and to be able to know what you can handle as far as your heart and your mindset as you grow older,” says Jane’e Bass, the Lead Youth Development Coordinator of the Boys and Girls Club of Cambridge.
Host with Boys and Girls Club, Ms. Jane’e Bass says events like these are of great need for the kids in Cambridge providing them a way to express themselves. “Letting them know that it is okay to talk. We have some youth that we’re not able to express themselves originally, them getting comfortable enough to talk and express how they feel on a daily basis showed me that this was an event that they need,” says Bass.
In the program, 5th grader Milan Britt says she learned that she can be anything she wants to be. “I think it means to love yourself don’t care what other people say and just move along with life and if people hate on you that means that they’re not comfortable with themselves,” says Milan Britt.
Kids ages 6 through 12 were able to participate in the fun, learning that you have to start loving yourself at a young age. “When they get a head start of really believing in themselves they really don’t feel as though that when they get older they don’t need anyone to validate them,” says Trichologist, Senior Cosmetologist, and Certified Confidence Coach Brandi Wallace.
For the kids at home that weren’t able to attend, certified confidence coach Ms. Brandi Wallace encourages: “whatever is in your heart to do, know that that is what your purpose is,” says Ms. Brandi.
It’s Ms. Jane’e’s hope that she can host more self-love events in the future. The event was in honor of the self-love national holiday.
